We Don’t Look Like What I’ve Been Through

Life has a way of presenting challenges that can make us feel horrible. But, no matter what life has thrown your way, look in the mirror and say to yourself – I don’t look like what I’ve been through. (Because you don’t!)

I occasionally spend some time reading through the posts on our page.  It’s really nice to see how others view the world and seeing all of the blessings grandchildren bring.

But what I really marvel at is the personal responses we give on the “getting to know you” questions.  What is your favorite color?  What is your favorite memory? …etc.  When I am intrigued by the response, I sometimes look at the profile picture to see who responded.  All I can say is – THANK GOD, We don’t look like what I’ve been through!  We look Damn Good Glam-mas!

We have come from various places: loving homes, broken homes, without a mother or father or both, adoptions, lost children, children that don’t love or respect us or themselves, substance abuse, rape, mental illness, depression, broken marriages, financial turmoil…But, THANK GOD, WE don’t look like what I’ve been through!

Whether you are standing tall, on bended knee or laying prostrate on the floor – You’re still alive to see another day!  That means you’re not finished with your part of the journey.  You still have a purpose.  So, dust yourself off and stand even taller, unbend those knees or roll over so that your looking upward.  They say as long as you can look up – you can get up! So, while you’re down there, do some yoga stretches, regain your power. Then, say to yourself, don’t look like what I’ve been through!

When you can, take a look back at all of the problems and situations you have overcome in your life.  Amazing, isn’t it?  Life has tried to knock you down and out.  You have taken those punches and made it through. You might be tired or exhausted, but you look DAMN GOOD!

You know why?  Because you are better than those situations.  You are stronger than what life has thrown at you.  Yes, there have been moments that you felt as if you didn’t know if you could take another breath…but you did!  You overcame! No matter what anyone says, remember you are strong and you have a purpose. You keep putting one foot in front of the other and move forward.

In the midst of your strength and determination, remember you are modeling this for your children and grandchildren.  They are strong BECAUSE OF YOU. They are powerful BECAUSE OF YOU. They are loving BECAUSE OF YOU.  They are determined BECAUSE OF YOU.  They are resilient BECAUSE OF YOU. They are alive BECAUSE OF YOU

It has been said that there are some things you learn in the calm and some things you learn in the storm.  What a wonderful gift a storm can be?  It’s like with a diamond.  When you first see a diamond, you would think it was a piece of garbage.  But after it goes through an intense process, it’s one of the most valuable items known to man. (As are you!)  So, as you continue your journey, remember to look back to see what you’ve made it through.  If you did it once, you’ll do it again.

This is a little something that I penned the other day.

I don’t look like what I’ve been through, Thank God this is true.

because if I did, Lord, what would I do?

I’ve been through the fire, I’ve been through the rain. I’ve been through things that could drive one insane.

But, I have my weapons to fight off the storm. Like my coat of armor to keep me from harm.

I have my faith, I have my hope, I have may family to help me cope.

So when I’m feeling some kind-a-way

I must remember that in spite of it all, I’m here to stay.

I’m stronger, I’m wiser, I’m among the living.  That means that I need to keep on giving

it a try, doing my best. Because I know I can pass each test.

I am beautiful and brave and strong and brand new.

I don’t know like what I’ve been through – thank God this is true.

Listen to the song ‘I don’t look like what I’ve been through’ when you need to remember.
